Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School Demolition
December, 2006
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Easton, MN, decommissioned their Kindergarten through 8th grade school. The building had an abundance of asbestos, a leaking roof and was rapidly deteriorating. After careful consideration, the parish decided that demolition, rather than renovation, was the best course of action regarding the aging structure.
Dulas Excavating was hired to lead the project. As a first course of action, to minimize the damage to the surrounding roads and turf, the demolition team decided to complete the project during the winter months. They used an array of machines including a skid loader with demolition grapple to strip sanitary waste and debris from the interior of the building. Since the main structure consisted of heavily reinforced concrete post and beam, a steel floor and solid roof trusses, an excavator with thumb was needed to complete the demolition. The steel was separated and removed for recycling, while the stockpiled concrete and block were crushed onsite and used for backfill.
